Residents in Effingham County and the surrounding area may soon notice a new name on the trash trucks. On February 17, Sanitation Service, Inc., sold certain waste collection assets to Ohio-based family company, Rumpke Waste & Recycling.

“The Deibel, Hayes and Tegeler families have owned and operated Sanitation Service, Inc. and Landfill 33 for 63 years, but we have come to a crossroads with our business,” said Brian Hayes, Sanitation Service owner. “While the name on the trucks may change, the team servicing the community will not change. All of our team members have joined Rumpke and will continue providing our customers with the outstanding, personal service they’ve come to expect and deserve.

”In addition to the hauling operation, Rumpke will also take over operations at Landfill 33 and the Effingham Transfer Station.

“Rumpke has extensive knowledge of the waste and recycling industry, having operated landfills and recycling facilities for nearly a century,” said Hayes. “The expertise they bring to landfill construction and management will be very useful to the County and the surrounding region. And with them being a fellow, family-owned business they share our same values.”

Rumpke currently owns or operates 14 regional landfills and 14 recycling facilities as well as 25 transfer stations in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. Landfill 33 will be its first landfill in Illinois.

“We are very excited about the opportunity to expand our services into Illinois,” said Jeff Rumpke, area president, Rumpke Waste & Recycling. “Sanitation Service has been a successful, well-trusted business, and we hope to build upon their success while ensuring Effingham County and the surrounding region continues to have access to cost-effective and environmentally sound disposal options.”
