Are the tires on your car beginning to show their age to the point of being unsafe? Has the time come to scrap those rubber circles? If so, I beseech you not to just toss it into another towering tire pile. You know the type I’m on about; those ugly black pyramidal eyesores which you’ll find with alarming regularity in landfills.

Their repulsive appearance is only the tip of the iceberg. They allow harmful toxins to enter the Earth’s atmosphere and they are a magnet for vermin to congregate. The problem gets even worse when they are set alight, creating massive fires that could burn for weeks. This not only creates a potential safety hazard; it also emits even more carbon dioxide into the air, while any run-off could seep into the ground and cause water contamination.

What if, instead of having to dump old tires, you could give them a new lease of life by filling a household niche? Scrap tires make for excellent dog beds and flower beds, although if you plan on letting your canine rest on one, make sure it’s impeccably clean and won’t emit any harmful chemicals. Old tires can also be used as innovative furniture embellishments or mirror frames, and let’s not forget their classic repurposing as back yard swings!

Be creative, be original. Most of all, be eco-conscious when deciding what to do with scrap tires. There’s bound to be some way that you could repurpose it for use in your home, rather than adding it to already top-heavy tire piles in wretched landfills.

Here’s an excellent infographic from Titan Australia (http://www.titanaust.com.au/) which discusses this important environmental topic and suggests some more ways in which you can find a practical and eco-friendly use for scrap tires.
