SCS Engineers was awarded a contract with the City of Chula Vista to conduct a  waste characterization study. The study will document the types and quantities of materials that typically end up in the landfill, which could reasonably be diverted to recycling or organic programs. SCS will provide representative sampling, sorting, data collection, and reporting of the solid waste generated by residential, commercial and self-haul customers. The materials will be characterized and quantified in accordance with the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CalRecycle) Solid
Waste Studies criteria.

To help the City develop diversion programs, SCS will provide a recoverability analysis of the waste, with waste
materials classified into four groups:
• Recyclable materials – Paper, plastic and metals
• Compostable materials – Organic material that are appropriate for municipal composting
programs
• Potentially recoverable – Materials for which methods or technologies exist for recycling, reuse
or other beneficial use but are not currently recovered
• Non-Recoverable materials – Materials that are not easily recovered or diverted

“The City of Chula Vista already diverts two-thirds of its solid waste to recycling and other programs,” said Michelle Leonard, a vice president with SCS. “This new study will help the City continue to improve the way it deals with waste and helps ensure compliance with new state requirements.”
