Because fenders and hanger brackets are available in stainless steel, painted steel and polyethylene, each material must be cleaned and maintained in different ways to ensure proper longevity.

Fenders and mud flap hangers endure extreme environmental and service conditions during standard over–the-road/on-road duty. The benefits of spray suppression products such as quarter fenders, tandem fenders or mud flap hanger brackets are more than simply reducing spray from wet roads for improved driving conditions. The reduction in spray keeps your truck and its components cleaner, which can extend the life of your equipment. Fuel savings are an added benefit when fenders have an aerodynamic design. Spray suppression also makes your customer happier because your load will arrive cleaner.

Proper maintenance of your fenders and hanger brackets will allow the maximum amount of service and use. Because fenders and hanger brackets are available in stainless steel, painted steel and polyethylene, each material must be cleaned and maintained in different ways to ensure proper longevity.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel products available include quarter fenders and mud flap hanger brackets. A clear or white PVC protecting stretch film may be present on the part when purchased. This is used to protect the finish during manufacturing and may be removed after installation. A glass cleaner and soft cotton cloth can be used to remove any residue from the coating after installation.  Once installed, stainless steel products can develop surface rust if not kept clean and polished. A stainless finish can be easily scratched, so do not use abrasives or scour pads to remove dirt or grime. It may be necessary to use products like tar and bug remover to remove heavy road grime. Commercially available polishing products that help remove surface rust and polish the surface are recommended, but never use an abrasive compound on the stainless steel as it will damage the finish. A coat of light wax will also help to preserve the finish.

Painted Steel

When painted steel mud flap hanger brackets and mounting kits are coated with an electrostatically-applied, baked-on finish, the part becomes very durable. This finish serves as both a final coating or as a primer coating for overpainting. Standard washes are recommended but acidic washes or engine degreasers should not be applied to the painted surface. It may be necessary to use products like tar and bug remover to remove heavy road grime. Use of a clean water rinse on the part interior will help to dislodge and remove any corrosive materials lodged within the part. A coat of light wax will help to preserve the finish.

Polyethylene

Polyethylene products have gained popularity over the past 10 years.  They are lightweight for improved fuel economy and are UV and corrosion resistant. These products are the easiest to maintain because they are not affected by salt or corrosion. For these type of products we strongly recommend washing your fenders with water only. If detergents are necessary, do not use anything stronger than a mild soap and water.

Spray Suppression

In conclusion, no matter what type of spray suppression product you purchase for your truck, proper cleaning and maintenance is vital for extending the life of not only the product but your truck as well.  Different material types and finishes require different cleaning methods and products to ensure your product isn’t damaged in the process.   Some product types, most specifically polyethylene, are easier to maintain than others.  By following our suggestions above you will have a cleaner truck that will last longer and deliver a cleaner load to your customers.
