Springfield is working to create a city-run facility where residents can drop off things like yard waste and branches in the future. The Springfield City Council has approved close to $3 million for the new site. The city is currently contracted with Evan’s Recycling, where organic waste like leaves and branches can be taken by residents to dispose of for free. Evan’s is also where Public Works disposes waste from branch and yard waste pickups.

Public Works Director Nate Bottom says that Evan’s will no longer operate the service in the next few years, so the city is planning ahead to create a new location near the existing Public Works location on Clearlake Avenue. “We wanted to make sure that in planning for the future, that we would have a site that could function, as well as expand it to where we could do composting as well,” Bottom said.

Bottom says that $800,000 dollars will be spent on purchasing the property, and $1 million will go towards prepping the new site. Public Works plans to begin purchasing equipment soon.
