The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) announces that beginning March 9, 2015, it will distribute Safety Monday to all members as a standard membership service. Safety Monday is a weekly one-page safety tip published by the National Waste & Recycling Association (NW&RA). It aims to provide helpful safety tips that solid waste professionals can use in their day-to-day work and for years to come. SWANA hopes its members will use the safety tips to support safe operations’ messages in their workplaces – distributing the flyer to operators and sharing it in break rooms and other common areas. “Safety is something we can all agree on,” says SWANA Deputy Executive Director Sara Bixby. “Everybody wants their co-workers, employees and themselves to go home safe from work each night.”

SWANA and NW&RA share concerns for safety in the solid waste industry. In September 2014, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics listed refuse and recyclable material collectors in the top 5 for most dangerous jobs. The two organizations have previously teamed on safety efforts – supporting state-level legislation that encourages drivers to slow down when passing stopped collection vehicles and in safety seminars held at state and national conferences.“Distributing a weekly safety tip to our members is a small gesture we can make to help facilitate the safety of solid waste professionals in North America,” adds Bixby. “When it comes to safety, every little bit helps.”
