The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) is launching its inaugural National Student Design Competition. Created by SWANA’s Young Professionals (YP) group, this inaugural event will be held at SWANA’s annual conference, WASTECON®, August 26-28, 2015, in Orlando, Florida. The National Solid Waste Design Competition (SWDC) is a team challenge that asks participants to solve a “real world” problem faced by solid waste professionals. Through this structured activity, students will have the opportunity to gain industry-related design experience and be introduced to potential careers in solid waste management. “The solid waste industry offers incredible and frequently overlooked professional opportunities for new graduates,” says SWANA Deputy Executive Director Sara Bixby. “We hope this student competition will demonstrate the potential for a robust career in an intriguing field.”

The SWDC aims to provide students with practical solid waste management-related experience and establish an excellent networking opportunity for students to connect with potential employers while attending WASTECON, the premier solid waste industry event. “As a young professional, SWANA offers the connections, education and resources to enhance your position in the job field,” says Katie Sandoe, chair of the YP Steering Committee. “This competition, in conjunction with WASTECON®, will offer students access to the latest technological developments and great industry minds at this premier conference. In addition, students get to showcase their talents to a potential field of employers.”

Students interested in participating in the competition should visit the SWDC website to access the problem statement and protocol document, as well as important deadline information. Questions regarding the competition should be directed to Karam Singh, [email protected], or Nathan Mayer, [email protected].
