The Town of Ponoka will kick off its new household battery recycling pilot program on July 25 at the Waste Transfer Station (northeast of the corporate limits on 46 Street). This program is an expansion of the town’s current E-Waste Electronics Recycling Program. According to the town, it has diverted almost half of its waste from the landfill over the last two years. “The new household battery recycling pilot program is another way the town can continue its mission of diverting waste from the landfill,” said Dwayne Kwolick in a press release.
Kwolick is the manager of environmental services for the Town of Ponoka. The household battery recycling program will accept rechargeable and single-use batteries weighing less than five kilograms or 11 pounds. The positive and negative battery terminals (both ends) must be taped using clear packing tape, duct tape or non-conductive electrical tape.
The Waste Transfer Station will not accept batteries with painter’s tape, masking tape or scotch tape. The Waste Transfer Station will also continue to accept vehicle batteries for recycling. The Waste Transfer Station will not accept any batteries that show signs of damage. When recycling batteries, citizens are asked to check in by driving onto the scale at the Waste Transfer Station.
