The Washington State Recycling Association (WSRA), a nonprofit organization representing the state’s diverse recycling industry, presents their third Washington Recycles Every Day (WRED) event of 2017, “The Waste Stream of the Future: Innovation in Composite Recycling.” This educational workshop will take place on Thursday, July 27 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at The Landing Mall in Port Angeles, with coffee and networking starting at 9:30 AM.

We will be exploring in depth, the industry and practices of composites and composite recycling and their impact on the economy and manufacturing in Washington. From cell phone covers to park benches, from planes, boats, automobiles, skis and wind turbines, carbon fiber based composites are all around us. These materials are constantly evolving and as a result our waste stream is constantly changing.

The presentation portion of the event will feature leading experts in the composites field, including Norm Nelson, Sr. Process Engineer at the Composite Recycling Technology Center (CRTC), Brian Young, Clean Technology Sector Lead with the Washington Department of Commerce, Karl Englund, Associate Research Professor with the Washington State University Composite Materials and Engineering Center and Stephanie
Sears, Environmental Manager with Toray Composite Materials America, Inc.

This event will include a tour of the Composite Recycling Technology Center (CRTC) also in Port Angeles, WA. The CRTC is the only facility in the world to divert uncured carbon fiber composite scrap from landfills and transform it into consumer products. The CRTC provides the ability to convert carbon fiber material into value-added products including the onsite production of pickle ball paddles. Attendees will get a behind the scenes tour providing a closer look at the facility’s state-of-the-art production equipment, manufacturing center and research labs.

This event is open to the public and includes lunch, topic discussions and networking opportunities with leaders in Washington’s recycling industry. Young environmental professionals are highly encouraged to attend. Registration costs are as follows: WSRA members $75, Non-members $95, Students with a valid student ID $35. To register for this event, please go to www.wsra.net or call the WSRA office at (206) 244-0311.
