The Washington State Recycling Association (WSRA), a nonprofit organization representing the state’s diverse recycling industry, presents their second Washington Recycles Every Day (WRED) event of the year, “Public and Private Partnerships: Success in Skagit County”. This educational workshop will take place on Thursday, September 17 from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM at the Burlington, WA city hall council chambers, with coffee and networking starting at 8:45 AM. The event will give an in depth look at how the public and private partnerships within the recycling industry result in thriving businesses and communities.  Participants will explore how local and regional governments interconnect with private industry to successfully and consistently divert materials from a landfill.

“We are excited to be highlighting the collaborations taking place in Skagit County, shared Anne Baunach, executive director of WSRA. “The work being done there is a model that others can learn from as to how public and private entities can successfully work together in the recycling industry. Seeing this partnership in action as well as hearing from other industry experts will make for a motivating and educational day.”  Expert insight into the construction and demolition recycling and green building industries will be shared. In addition, the role of nationally certified recycling facilities and the end product of the recycled materials will also be explored, hearing from Port Townsend Paper. Attendees will also receive a historic and in person look at the planning and development of the solid waste system in Skagit County which created a hub of recycling activities all in one convenient location. Tours of Lautenbach Construction & Demolition Materials Recovery Facility and Skagit County’s newly remodeled transfer and recycling station will follow the morning presentations.

This event is open to the public and includes lunch, topic discussions and networking opportunities with leaders in Washington’s recycling industry. Students and professors in the environmental science fields, as well as young environmental professionals are highly encouraged to participate. Registration costs are as follows: WSRA members $65, Non-members $85, students with a valid student ID $35.
