Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS), Chicagoland’s leading independent recycling and waste diversion services provider, today announced it has been awarded a five-year residential waste and recycling contract with the City of Wheaton, effective Oct. 1, 2016.

The company’s active use of permanent RFID-enabled tags on bins to improve service delivery accuracy was a compelling driver behind the City of Wheaton’s selection decision. LRS first introduced the innovative RFID-enabled bins earlier this year in North Shore municipalities, including the City of Highland Park.
RFID technology is considered breakthrough in the waste industry. The technology tracks pickups and links to the customer’s account, ensuring accuracy in billing for Wheaton’s 14,000 residential households. When carts are emptied, the LRS truck and carts wirelessly communicate to properly bill residents. The cost of disposal for large and small households is expected to decrease under the LRS RFID-enabled program.
“It represents the cutting edge of waste collection as it combines automated collection with pay-as-you-throw pricing for both garbage and collectibles,” said City of Wheaton Assistant City Manager John Duguay.

The City of Wheaton LRS contract also includes an organic composting option, providing residents the opportunity to combine their food and landscape waste. LRS first introduced organic composting in Illinois, also known as organic recycling, when it won the City of Highland Park municipal contract at the beginning of this year.
