Millcreek Supervisors unanimously approved a pilot program contract with Conservation Compost, becoming the first municipality in Erie County to pilot a Food Waste Composting program. “The approval of the Food Waste Composting program demonstrates Millcreek Township’s commitment to sustainability practices,” said Millcreek Township Supervisor Kim Clear. “Composting food waste is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. We have provided a way for every resident to play an active role in preventing climate change.”

Jessica Stutzman, Millcreek Township’s Recycling Coordinator, lead the Conservation Compost Food Waste partnership. “Food waste makes up the largest component of the municipal waste stream and takes up the most space in local landfills, where it also emits methane, a greenhouse gas, as it breaks down,” said Stutzman. “American households send 30-40% of their food waste to the landfill each year. For an average family of 4, approximately 880 pounds of food is wasted annually.”
