At the Grant County Board of Commissioners meeting, Grant County coordinator James Standish reported that the county was awarded funding under the Environmental Assistance Program’s Great Minnesota Recycling and Composting grant, and will expand the pilot project’s operations to businesses.

The grant, expected to be $51,186 will be matched by $17,069 from the county to help restaurants, the school and the hospital in Elbow Lake recycle food waste. The grant may also cover senior housing.

The food waste will be composted by Pope/Douglas County Solid Waste and made available to the public. The waste subtracts from Elbow Lake’s solid waste tonnage with the expectation that it will save the city money in the future.
