The Hilliard Recreation and Parks Department is thinking big when it comes to the environment in 2022. “It is in our nature to care about parks, but we wanted to take our efforts to another level this year,” department director Ed Merritt said. “We have always considered the environment when planning our programs, but there is room for improvement.”

This year’s projects will focus on the Hilliard Family Aquatic Center, the Hilliard Senior Center and the Celebration at the Station concert series. At the Hilliard Family Aquatic Center, aquatics supervisor Anastasia Bradley is focused on finding a way to keep food waste out of the out of the landfill. “It is no secret that food waste heavily contributes to unnecessary materials found in the landfill,” Bradley said.

Nearly 1 million pounds of food waste is landfilled in Franklin County every day. At the Hilliard Family Aquatic Center, Bradley plans to partner with GoZERO Services and have bins available for composting. “We do not know how much food we will be able to divert from the landfill this year, but the important thing is that we are making every effort to do our part and help educate others along the way,” Bradley said.
