At the Recycling and Solid Waste Center in Ithaca, funds from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation will help to fund a construction project to replace an existing storage building with a prefabricated metal building designed to accept food waste and help the county reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

As a $436,000 project, the Tompkins County Legislature awarded Elmira Structures Inc. the contract to construct the food scraps transfer building. The building will be used to transfer source-separated commercial food scraps for composting.  “Having a centralized transfer building to accept commercial food scraps at our facility in Ithaca will serve to encourage further diversion efforts,” said Barbara Eckstrom, the county’s director of Recycling and Materials Management. “We fully expect the food scraps transfer building to be operational this fall. We’re excited to be taking this next logical step in our food scraps recycling program.”
