Lake County soon will have a new waste recycling director. John Minear, who has served as executive director for the Lake County Solid Waste Management District for more than two years, has announced he is leaving to take a job in the private sector.
The Lake County Solid Waste Management District Board voted last week to accept his resignation effective Oct. 6.
Lake County Councilman David Hamm said this week the waste board has named Assistant Director Jeanette Roman to serve as the interim director for the next six months.
“We will decide then whether to hire a new assistant director or a new director,” Hamm said.
Minear said Monday, “My wife and I had lived in the Dayton, Ohio, area for a number of years. I got a job in the Cincinnati area. It’s still in the waste business.”
Minear, who previously served as a municipal landfill and solid waste manager in Buckeye, Arizona, took over the district’s administration in March 2015.
He leaves a district that earmarks nearly $4.4 million of local property tax money for city and town recycling programs, which include leaf collecting and composting, and recycling education.
The district spends another $450,000 to repay its public debt and $400,000 in staff salaries and benefits.
“The job here was exactly what I expected,” Minear said. “I knew the people who were already here were good people. The board made some very good fiscal decisions before I got here, so I knew they would be fiscally responsible and conservative.
