NWRA applauds the House and Senate for ensuring the States Afforded Funding Extensions To Oppose Driving Recklessly In Vehicular Engagements (SAFE TO DRIVE) Act was included in the bipartisan infrastructure legislation. The bill provides important funding to states to reduce distracting driving through greater enforcement and education.
“NWRA is pleased Congress included legislation that provides funds to support education and enforcement to make our roads safer from distracted drivers,” said NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith. “We believe mobile phones are an inherently addictive consumer product that causes distracted drivers to injure and kill our waste and recycling workers as they go about their jobs.”
NWRA has previously contacted the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to address safety concerns regarding the dangers that mobile phones and distracted driving present to highway users in general and waste and recycling collection workers specifically. Each agency responded that it is not responsible for regulating mobile phones.
