The city of Pawtucket wants to send less trash to the landfill. It’s not just for environmental reasons, but also to save the city money since it has to pay for all the trash it sends to the state’s facilities in Johnston. Pawtucket Public Works Business Manager Richard Karsulavitch says, “Costs over at the transfer station and at the landfill, prices have been going up for the cost of doing business throughout the state.  So, we started looking at ways that we could save money.”

The city is teaming up with local organizations to make it easier for residents to recycle or donate items that could otherwise be a challenge when it comes to proper disposal, like mattresses, box springs, electronics, air conditioners, televisions, and even clothing, to name a few. Karsulavitch says, “All this now is being diverted from going to the landfill, which now is being recycled and is actually saving the city money by not going to the landfill.”
