Department of Sanitation New York (DSNY), in collaboration with Sustainable Generation and DENALI Water Solutions LLC, announces the launch of the most advanced composting facility in the Northeast at the Staten Island Compost Facility. This innovative initiative will transform the facility from an open windrow turning operation to a state-of-the-art SG BUNKER® System with GORE® Covers, setting new standards in environmentally responsible food waste processing.

The decision to upgrade the Staten Island Compost Facility was not taken lightly. DSNY and its consultant conducted an exhaustive composting technology evaluation to identify the best solution for this facility. Of paramount importance was the ability to meet stringent state and local regulatory requirements, including:

  1. Meeting strict air quality standards for odors and VOC emission reduction
  2. Complete separation of process water (leachate) from stormwater
  3. Production of high-quality finished compost

After rigorous evaluation, Sustainable Generation’s SG BUNKER® System with GORE® Covers emerged as the ideal choice. Since then, Sustainable Generation has collaborated closely with GHD Engineers and DENALI to design and implement this groundbreaking system.

Ian Twine, the Deputy Director of Solid Waste Management for DSNY, has anticipated this launch for some time now. “I’m one of the few who have been with the department since the beginning of this project…an 8-year process.” Twine says. “It is exciting to see the facility working as intended with Sustainable Generation and GORE® Cover technology. After an in-depth process to find the right technology to address odor and water separation, the SG/GORE system stood out as the clear choice.”

“We’re excited to be working with the Department of Sanitation New York (DSNY) and the DENALI team to support the expansion of critical food waste diversion programs to New York City, composting food scraps and keeping them out of landfills to eliminate the generation of methane and greenhouse gases.” Says Scott Woods, CEO of Sustainable Generation. “Our technology is uniquely designed to deliver the highest level of process control, meeting or exceeding the environmental standards while reducing the cost and complexity of food waste composting. The Staten Island Compost Facility is a model for composting facilities looking to process more food waste on a smaller footprint while meeting all environmental regulations for clean air and water.”
