This week, the Waste and Recycling Expo Canada and the Canadian Waste to Resource conference opened to great crowds with busy attendees getting a look at all of the technology available for everything from hauling and safety to landfills and waste conversion. Held at the International Centre in the great city of Toronto, everyone had a chance to see the latest and greatest products, services, commentaries and discussion from industry experts. The Expo featured an exhibit hall that was packed with vendors and manufacturers eager to meet people and find out how their solution could possibly help the company’s operation in the long term. The welcome reception provided great networking opportunities as the crowd enjoyed food, drinks and good company.

Canadian Waste

While the Expo was taking place, the Canadian Waste to Resource conference was being held simultaneously at the Centre as well. Not only were attendees treated to great presentations from numerous prominent speakers who talked about the industry trends in Canada during the conference, but before the start, on Tuesday, people had a chance to take a tour of several facilities, including the City of Toronto Disco Road Anaerobic Digestion Facility, Region of Peel’s Integrated Waste Facility, and the Brampton Community Recycling Centre. Wednesday, the conference opened with a discussion on climate change, Canada’s waste management sector, transitioning to a low, carbon economy and even addressing medical marijuana in the workplace. After giving the attendees a chance to visit the Expo floor and breaking for lunch, the breakout sessions focused on the subjects of landfill management, waste diversion, hot topics, and hazardous waste. On Thursday, after the morning presentation on the challenges of waste in Canada and how to improve the country’s record on reducing and recycling waste, attendees heard topics on resource recovery, collection, and organics before being treated to a luncheon with the keynote speaker who addressed the evolving industry and the drivers of change. It was a great conference and attendees walked away with more ideas, information and a better finger on the pulse of the industry.
