At the Otsego County Board of Commissioners’ April 23 meeting, members unanimously approved a bid by American Waste. The costs include hauling, processing and bin rental. The contract runs from June 1, 2019, through May 31, 2023. Recyclers will see a few changes in the process when the switch is made from Emmet County to American Waste, according to Rachel Frisch, Otsego County administrator. “The recycling program will be accepting all of the same materials as before, plus we are pleased to announce that Styrofoam is now also accepted,” Frisch said in an email.

“In addition to being able to accept Styrofoam, another enhancement to the recycling program is that American Waste offers Single Stream recycling, so it will no longer be necessary to sort recyclables into two separate bins,” Frisch added. “This will be more convenient for the public.”

The five drop-off sites will remain in the same locations and there will be several bins at each site, Frisch indicated. “Yes there will be multiple bins to accommodate the volume of recyclables,” she said. “Otsego County recycles over 2,000,000 pounds of materials each year. So we will have multiple bins at each site, but now we won’t need to sort the materials.”

American Waste provided a bid of $818,000 for the four-year contact and will also receive a 5 percent local vendor allowance, reducing the total to $777,100, according to county documents. American Waste is considered a local company with a site in Gaylord at 254 Little League Drive.
