The Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management’s (DSWM) Waste Management Fund has received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). The prestigious award was presented to DSWM for the Waste Management Enterprise Fund’s comprehensive annual financial report for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2019.

This marks the 26th consecutive year the DSWM’s Waste Management Fund has earned this recognition. “For more than a quarter century, GFOA has annually recognized our department’s commitment to both providing excellent waste collection and disposal services to our customers in Miami-Dade County, and the responsible stewardship of the resources entrusted to us by our customers,” said Michael Fernandez, DSWM Director. “We remain dedicated to a spirit of transparency and meeting the GFOA’s high standards. This would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our Controller Division’s staff, our management team, and all the men and women of the Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management.”

According to GFOA, “the Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.”

The CAFR was judged by a panel of impartial experts to meet extremely high standards, including “demonstrating a constructive spirit of disclosure to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.”
