Whenever you’re trying to drive around a garbage truck, you need to be careful. As of this week, that’s the law. New York’s Move Over Law is expanding November 1 to include recycling and waste collection vehicles.

The Move Over Law requires that, when possible, drivers change lanes when they approach a parked, stopped or standing emergency vehicle with flashing lights. When it’s not possible to get over a lane, drivers must slow down.

Currently, the Move Over Law applies for law enforcement vehicles, tow trucks, HELP trucks, roadway construction crews, roadway maintenance crews, and volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers. Garbage trucks will be added to that list Tuesday.
